Langkawi's Amazing Canopy Trekking
Canopy trekking or as is known in other terms like air trekking, aerial canopy discovery or maybe rainforest canopy adventure, describe the activity of abseiling, rappelling, climbing, jungle trekking and gliding high above the ground on a cable system. It offers a fantastic adrenaline rush that will appeal to those who love extreme sports, as once you start, there are few opportunities to withdraw gracefully. The only other system like the Langkawi circuit is located in the rainforests of Costa Rica.
Pioneered by German-born Jurgen Zimmerer, an adventurer of sorts who call Langkawi 'home' Terms like 'flying fox journey' are used to describe this unique aerial canopy discovery. The whole system is a mix of cables with safety- and brake handrails, platforms, abseil/rappeling activities and a postmans bridge and offers basically two versions of activity- and adventure level. The movie 'The Medicine Man' starring Sean Connery as a doctor researching the rainforest canopy in South America featured a system of ropes and cables which enabled him to move in the rain forest tree canopy with his hands free to collect specimens for analysis. The movie popularised the activity and kicked 'Air Trekking' off as a trend sports and activity in Europe, the United States and South America, although the technical advances do not allow any comparison anymore to the systems depicted in the movie.
While in Europe the emphasis on Air Trekking is embedded in its adventure aspects, the idea for Langkawi is founded on its environmental and ecological opportunities, as an Air Trekking System enables tourists, scientists, professional and amateur photographers and film teams to discover the rainforest canopy world by day and night from a completely new perspective.
