Penguin Home Zooming Up
Every day we're surprised at how fast this futuristic new complex at Underwater World is shooting up. Local wisdom on the Langkawi bar circuit is that the powers-that-be ordered the penguins but forgot they needed somewhere to stay, so they're now living in an ice cream factory while the builders work round the clock to finish the new penguin house.
Elements of truth glimmer the first shipment of penguins were transported from Langkawi airport to their new home in an ice cream truck. The 20 rockhopper penguins are at home in a room chilled to 8 degrees C pending the completion of the two impressive new penguinariums (?!) that looks straight out of a Jetsons rerun. The 4 Kg birds stand 60 cm tall and are exceedingly cute. Anyone who has visited a penguinarium will be waiting with excitement to see these new additions to Underwater world . These new immigrants to Malaysia are south-polar species with spectacular long eyebrows. They journeyed from Nightingale Island in the faraway Tristan de Cunha islands via South Africa to their new home.
They will be joined shortly by a group of Blackfoot penguins more suited to this tropical clime. We'll keep you posted and hope to be at the opening party!
