Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical procedures in the world. It has been practiced for at least 5,000 years in the Indus Valley, China, India and much of Asia. There is evidence that acupuncture may have been used as early as 30,000 years ago in Sri Lanka. The origins are said to lie in early battles, when it was noted that wounds often mysteriously caused chronic medical conditions to disappear. Over centuries this was developed to a science which recognizes 26 main energy pathways along which lie more than 1000 acupuncture points.
In Acupuncture, successful diagnosis of a given disease is done by reading the pulse. Whereas western medicine recognizes only one type of pulse, acupuncture has 12 types of pulses which are felt in both radial arteries with three fingers next to each other and at the same time two different pressure strengths. The state of 12 different organs are ascertained by taking the pulse.
Medical problems stem from imbalances of energy, which are corrected by inserting fine solid needles into the correct acupuncture points, thereby sending messages to the offending organs to function correctly. This restores the body's optimum energy balance, and stimulates the body's own healing response to help restore its natural balance. A great deal of recent scientific research has confirmed the extraordinary acupuncture effect. While often recommended to relieve pain, acupuncture is used to treat people with a wide range of illnesses. At this time there are no known contraindications to acupuncture treatment.
Acupuncture treatment address specific symptoms but is focused is on improving the overall well being of the patient. It is effective in curing various diseases, some which are resistant to conventional methods of treatment. WHO (World Heath Organization) has identified 56 diseases that cannot be treated by conventional medicine where acupuncture is recommended.
The body's natural balance can be disturbed by anxiety, stress, anger, fear or grief, poor nutrition, weather conditions, hereditary factors, infections, poisons and trauma. The principal aim of acupuncture in treating the whole person is to recover the equilibrium between the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the individual. Acupuncture needles are metallic, solid, and hair-thin. People experience acupuncture differently, but most feel no or minimal pain as the needles are inserted.
