Gathering of Mahsuri Clan in Langkawi
Coming from near and far, 150 descendants of Langkawi"s legendary Mahsuri attended a family gathering at the house of a seventh-generation descendant in Kampung Paya, Pulau Dudur here.
It was the first time the annual gathering was held at the home of Rosnisham Mat Isa, 31, in the village where five other families of descendants live.
Organiser Mohd Said Latiff, 65, said the gatherings had been held for more than five years in various places, including Bangkok.
Those who attended the gathering yesterday came from as far as Sadao in Thailand.
"I have been looking for all Mahsuri descendants for the last 40 years and hope to unite them through such gatherings," said Mohd Said.
Most of the descendants, he added, lived in Thailand.
According to legend, Mahsuri was executed after she was unjustly accused of adultery some 200 years ago. She shed white blood at the execution, a sign of her innocence.
With her dying breath, she pronounced a curse that Langkawi would not prosper for seven generations. After her death, her husband, Wan Darus, and son, Wan Hakim, moved to Phuket, Thailand.
Mohd Said said the annual gatherings were to allow Mahsuri"s descendants to get to know each other.
Malaysian Malay Chamber of Commerce vice-president Datuk Muhammad Muhiyuddin Abdullah, a seventh-generation descendant, said he knew most of Mahsuri"s descendants.
