Government Solidly Behind Le Tour de Langkawi Cycle Race
Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has pledged the Governments continuous support for Le Tour de Langkawi, the annual cycling event that has made Malaysia a prime venue for other similar international professional races.
The Prime Minister said he was proud of the event that was first staged here nine years ago. I am glad to know that the Malaysian race has been rated the world s fourth best well-organised event for cycling, he told thousands of spectators who had gathered at Dataran Merdeka to watch the final leg of the race.
Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was the prime mover of Le Tour de Langkawi. This year, the race was held over 10 days, covering 10 routes from Penang to Johor. The race s finale, known as a criterium, is where riders toured the city centre here over 12 laps. Abdullah sat through the last leg of the race from 3.30pm to 5.30pm, accompanied by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Hishammuddin Hussein and race organising executive chairman Datuk Wan Lokman Wan Ibrahim.
