Prawn Breeding Company Sets Up Gallery
The legendary island of Langkawi has plenty of attractions, which had brought tourists local and foreign, and Syarikat Sumber Nadi Alam Sdn Bhd wants to add to this with the setting up of a prawn gallery.
The company, which has done well in its prawn breeding project at Bukit Mulut here, plans to turn a building near the breeding pond into a gallery where visitors could see for themselves the prawn breeding process right from at the fry stage until it is matured. The company's managing director, Hashnoel Mushim, said that pictures, slide presentations as well as replicas of prawns would be exhibited at the gallery.
"We are discussing with the Langkawi Tourism Association to bring in tourists here. Apart from getting information about prawn breeding they will also get to eat prawns at appropriate prices," he said here Friday.
The tiger prawns produced by the company called "Langkawi Shrimps" are available at major supermarkets like Carrefour, Jaya Jusco and Giant. Meanwhile, Hashnoel said that the company would increase its prawn production to 300 tonnes per year by the end of this year compared with 150 tonnes now. He said that to meet this target, 30 more ponds would be in operation soon, compared with 22 currently. Hashnoel said that the company also planned to expand by rearing kerapu and siakap. "Based on our research, these two types of fishes are in good demand," he added.
