Travel Domain Set For 2005 Launch (SPECIAL REPORT: 25th WTM)
The travel industry's own `travel` domain will be launched in the first half of next year.
The long-awaited move - giving travel its own space on the Internet - is likely to see a rush by travel companies to register new .travel addresses online.
In addition to having an industry-approved name, online sites will also be able to join a new .travel directory to offer a clear and quick search for services to avoid confusion over web information.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) - internationally recognised as the regulator for web addresses - has agreed to the .travel domain name and entered into an agreement with US company Tralliance to register the name.
`Travel spending accounts for more than 28 percent of all online transactions and the travel industry accounts for more than 11 percent of the world's economy, so the time for travel has clearly arrived,` said Tralliance Corp president and CEO, Ronald Andruff.
`This platform will give consumers greater confidence and provide a simpler and more relaible way of doing business for travel suppliers and sellers.`
Andruff said that further information about travel domain and the authentication process will be available at http://www.tralliance.info when negotiations with ICANN are completed
