Malaysia honoured to host World Tourism Day
Malaysia will host this year's World Tourism Day on Sept 27 - a rare opportunity as the next time she will play host is 144 years from now.
Tourism Minister Datuk Leo Michael Toyad said it was an honour for Malaysia to be the host country, which would be rotated among the 144 members of the World Tourism Organisation. For this, the ministry has planned a month-long celebration with the theme "Sports and Tourism: Two Living Forces for Mutual Understanding, Culture and the Development of Societies."
Among the activities lined up for the month-long festival, which started yesterday, are sports, quiz and art competitions, seminars and other tourism-related events. Dr Toyad said a World Tourism Day Run, opened to everyone at Dataran Merdeka on Sept 26, was also on the cards.
"The objective of World Tourism Day is to foster awareness among the national and international community on the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic values. "We hope everyone will join in to make it a memorable and exciting month," he said after launching the celebration here.
