Yacht Provisioning in Langkawi

Imported Western food products are available from several outlets, to satisfy any craving you might have, and the prices are quite reasonable due to Langkawi's duty-free status. The selection of vegetables from the island's markets is limited, given that little produce is grown here and must come from the mainland. Good bread is hard to find.

SUPERMARKETS

Teow Soon Huat

Probably the best supermarket on the island, with large section devoted to housewares. Good selection of liquor, beer and wine at good prices. Department store upstairs.

Samudra

Reasonably good supermarket in the Langkawi Fair shopping mall, a short walk from the ferry terminal on the road to Kuah. Handy if staying at Royal Langkawi Yacht Club marina. Decent selection of liquor, beer and wine though prices a little higher than elsewhere. Mall has usual variety of shops, McDonald's, Internet cafe.

PL Soon Huat

Supermarket about 800 metres from main intersection in Matsirat on road to Kuah. Small section next to checkout devoted to imported foods. Next door is a bulk wholesaler where cases of beer can be purchased very cheaply.

Fresh markets

The main market in Kuah is at the intersection of Jalan Persiaran Mutiara and the road to Tiara Hotel. Not a great selection of fruit and vegetables, but enough to get by. Better if you come early. Open daily.

Also, there's a good night market on the road to ferry terminal, with produce and prepared foods. If in Matsirat, go east from the main intersection, rather than toward Kuah, and across the bridge where there is a small market with a limited selection of fruits and vegetables. On Friday mornings, a vegetable stall is briefly set up at the Rebak ferry landing. Ferry ride from Rebak is free. Bring sharp elbows.

SPECIALTY FOODS

Chop Sun ChuanGood supply of excellent frozen meats and block cheese from New Zealand and Australia, turkeys from USA. Also butter and lots of imported packaged foods. Very friendly and helpful. 29 Jalan Pandak Mayah 4 in central Kuah.

McPhee Produce

Variety of fruits and vegetables imported from Australia. Family has its own market garden in Western Australia, the produce flown direct to Langkawi twice weekly, arriving 30 hours after being picked. Also has imported meat (portioned and vacuum packed), cheese, yoghurt, fruit juice, fresh herbs, and packaged food. Primary business is supplying better hotels, but yacht crew welcomed and some items stocked just for them, including used books. Airport area, about 300 metres north of turnoff to Langkasuka Boat Club.

Lucky Frozen

Imported meats, cheese, butter, ice cream and milk. Selection varies. West end of Matsirat, just before the turnoff to airport. WATER & iCE

Tap water is safe to drink and ice safe to eat. Block ice sometimes hard to find. In Kuah, if standing in front of Pier Restaurant, walk right, past main traffic lights. On left side of road, about two-thirds of the way down the block, turn left down a narrow footpath where you will find a small ice factory that sells block ice.

FUEL

Fuel docks at Langkawi Yacht Club and Rebak Marina sell diesel. Fuel dock at Pantai Kok Marina has diesel and petrol.

COPYING

SK Intertrade

Friendly family-run shop stocks a selection of local and regional charts for copying, or bring your own. Copies and binds books and manuals. Courtesy flags. Name cards. At 8 Jalan Pandak Mayah 1, in central Kuah, same road as Bayview Hotel. Call 966 7778 or Sameer on mobile 012 489 2326.

LAUNDRY

Self-service laundries at both Langkawi Yacht Club and Rebak marinas, and at Langkasuka Boat Club. A laundry is also planned at new Pantai Kok Marina.

HAM RADIO TEST

Twice a year, usually April and November, ham licence tests are given by qualified hams. US test, for which you need a US mailing address. Contact Karen Sheedy at email karenterry@uplands.org or yacht Dunyazad at Rebak Marina.
