Enchanting Langkawi - A Dialogue With Nature

The Island of Langkawi is an exotic holiday destination that offers world-class accommodation facilities and amenities sitting side by side with idyllic beaches, ancient rainforests and quaint villages.
Langkawi, which is part of the State of Kedah, was named after the eagle (helang in Malay language, but colloquially pronounced simply as Lang), hence the imposing eagle statue at Dataran Lang (Eagle Square), welcoming visitors who enter the island from mainland Malaysia through the Kuah Jetty.

Langkawi Practical Info

Visitors to Malaysia must possess a valid passport or other internationally recognised travel documents that are valid for at least six months beyond the intended visiting period.
The health standards in Malaysia are one of the best in Asia. Hospitals, private clinics and medical supplies, as well as pharmacies are widely available in Langkawi especially at Kuah Town. However, if you are visiting remote or mangrove areas, it is advisable to get mosquito coils or insect repellents to keep mosquitoes at bay. Citizens coming from yellow fever infected areas on the African and South American continents have to produce their yellow fever vaccination certificates for entry into Malaysia.

Getting Around Langkawi

Taxi is the best option of getting around the Island, as bus is not available in Langkawi. Ensure that to use only the licensed taxis identifiable by their yellow roof sign.

Malaysia - Tropical Island Paradise

There are about 1,000 islands off the coasts of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, ranging from tiny rocky uninhabited islets to the city state of Penang with a population of over half a million.
All the islands, except for the oceanic island of Pulau Sipadan off the coast of eastern Sabah, are continental shelf islands. During the Ice Age, they were connected to mainland Asia. Oceanic islands, on the other hand, are volcanic and have never been connected by land to any continent. Many of the islands in Malaysia have considerable scenic, scientific and educational appeal.
Malaysia, Thailand to Cooperate On Cross Border Tourism

The islands of the Tarutao National Park, an unspoiled natural paradise previously closed 6 months a year, can now be enjoyed all year with a new ferry service from Langkawi in Malaysia. Famous for azure seas and white beaches, the islands which include Ko Lipe and Ko Adang offer great scuba diving, big game fishing and wildlife. You Could Be Sailing Langkawi's Friendly Waters

Langkawi conjures up images of sun, sand, sea and eh, serenity. Yes, it's all of this, but also a lot more, as was confirmed on my last visit there. If we really want to take this alliteration further, sailing is the sport that will take Langkawi to a higher level of tourism.

Survive Winter - Beat The Blues With An Easy Week In The Sun

On balance, because it's now served by a nonstop flight, we'd pick the Malaysian island of Langkawi, which lies 50 miles north of Penang. Nowhere else in Asia gives you such easy access to a beach. However, it does mean you have to fly from Heathrow on either a Wednesday or a Sunday evening, although, since you have to fly back via Kuala Lumpur, you can return home on whichever day of the week you like.

Pulau Langkawi

Pulau Langkawi is the foremost of a group of 104 islands lying off the coast of Kedah, in northwestern Malaysia. Clustered together in a confusing, labyrinthine mass and situated along a major trade route, the Langkawi islands have--like the Islands of the Bahamas--a long history as a refuge of pirates.

Checking In & Out Langkawi

While there are few outlets selling marine chandlery, you can still locate most of what you need. Of course, the beauty of Langkawi is that if it's not here, you can order it from anywhere duty free.

Getting Around Langkawi

It's fairly easy to get around. Except for the occasional tour around the island, there's not that many places you will need to go. Most of your errands for boat bits and groceries will be to Kuah, where share taxis are cheap and plentiful.

Getting Away From Langkawi

The modern new Langkawi International Airport is in Matsirat, about 25-30 minutes from Kuah, only a few minutes from Langkasuka. Taxis charge about RM14 from Kuah.

Health Care in Langkawi

High quality of health care. Apart from the modern hospital in Kuah, built in the early '90s, and an older hospital in Matsirat, there are private and government-run clinics throughout the island. For anything serious, or requiring specialist services, you will want to get to the hospital in Kuah, but some sort of help is never far away.

Marinas Langkawi

With the backing of the Malaysian government, the yachting industry has grown rapidly from virtually nothing 10 years ago. Today there are three marinas, including a brand new one at Pantai Kok. With the major expansion to the Langkawi Yacht Club, Langkawi now has more wet berths than Phuket.

Moorings and Anchorages in Langkawi

The island group offers many spectacular anchorages, but for long-term stays the best year-round choices are in Bass Harbour, close to Kuah, or at the Langkasuka Boat Club.

Yacht Provisioning in Langkawi

Imported Western food products are available from several outlets, to satisfy any craving you might have, and the prices are quite reasonable due to Langkawi's duty-free status. The selection of vegetables from the island's markets is limited, given that little produce is grown here and must come from the mainland. Good bread is hard to find.
